About the role
Koniag Data Solutions, a Koniag Government Services company, is hiring a remote COBOL Developer to help keep a legacy DISA mainframe system running while supporting its ongoing modernization. You'll work hands-on in IBM MVS JCL and COBOL, fix production issues, and help the program stay compliant with DoD security standards. An active Secret clearance is required.
Responsibilities
- Write, modify, and maintain COBOL and COBOL Language Extender programs alongside IBM MVS JCL code
- Diagnose and resolve production issues under the guidance of senior mainframe developers
- Build and update technical documentation, including operating instructions and interface control diagrams
- Write and execute test cases, and take part in peer code reviews
- Support FTP/SFTP data transmission jobs between mainframe and downstream systems
- Work Level II and III help-desk tickets tied to the mainframe application
- Apply DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) to keep the environment compliant
- Monitor database load and interface processing for the supported application
- Track and action Change Requests and Deficiency Reports through the program's ISMT tracking system
- Support scheduled system releases and participate in team scrum ceremonies
- Use mainframe terminal emulation tools (e.g., DISA MIAP, Reflection ZFE) for day-to-day development work
Requirements
- Active Secret security clearance (required)
- 8+ years of hands-on COBOL programming experience
- 4+ years of experience with JCL, VSAM, DB2, and CICS
- Comfortable with mainframe debugging and problem-resolution tools
- Current CompTIA Security+ certification
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
- Preferred: prior experience in a DISA or other DoD mainframe environment
- Solid understanding of batch and online transaction processing on z/OS/MVS
