About the role
Robert Half Technology is hiring, on behalf of an insurance and financial-services client, a senior mainframe developer for a fully remote, six-month contract with strong potential to extend or convert to permanent. You'll keep a legacy COBOL/CICS/DB2 environment running while helping expose its data through modern APIs and AWS integrations — a mix of classic mainframe upkeep and forward-looking modernization work.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain production COBOL applications running on an IBM mainframe
- Design APIs that expose legacy mainframe data to modern systems
- Support batch processing jobs and online transaction workloads
- Handle day-to-day keep-the-lights-on (KTLO) maintenance and production support
- Design AWS-based integration solutions connecting mainframe and cloud systems
- Contribute to ongoing capability enhancements on existing applications
Requirements
- 10+ years of hands-on IBM mainframe development in a production environment
- Strong COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, and VSAM skills
- Experience building or supporting APIs, including SOAP and REST integrations
- Hands-on AWS experience is required, not just familiarity
- Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
- Nice to have: experience with Vantage or annuity administration systems, an insurance or financial-services background, or familiarity with AI-assisted development tools
