About the role

NPR is hiring an Audio Engineering Supervisor to lead day-to-day operations at its Washington, D.C. broadcast facilities. You'll manage a team of audio engineers, allocate resources across NPR's radio, podcast, and video production, and share on-call coverage with colleagues in New York and Los Angeles. It's a leadership role for an experienced broadcast/audio professional who thrives in a 24/7, deadline-driven newsroom and cares about developing a strong team.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the technical side of content creation and broadcast operations at NPR headquarters
  • Manage, train, and develop a team of at least 12 audio engineers across radio, podcast, and video
  • Provide 24/7 response to technology outages and staffing emergencies, including rotating on-call nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Develop and enforce production workflows across teams and locations
  • Provide backup supervision for NPR's Los Angeles and New York audio engineering teams
  • Lead hiring for audio engineering roles and ensure compliance with the NABET collective bargaining agreement

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional production, audio, and/or broadcast experience
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience or team leadership
  • Thorough grasp of audio engineering concepts, broadcast systems, automation, and audio/video routing
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical topics for editorial staff
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in broadcast engineering, production, communications, or management
  • Willingness to work off-hours and weekends; hybrid schedule with at least two days on-site in D.C.
