About the role
WEDU, Tampa Bay's PBS member station, is looking for a freelance Technical Director to call the shots in the control room for its local productions. You'll direct and technical-direct multi-camera studio shoots — from ongoing local series and one-off specials to pledge drives and client productions — steering camera operators and technical crew through setup and taping, then handing finished, properly logged content to the Operations and Traffic teams for air. This role reports to the Production Manager and suits someone equally comfortable calling shots live and running a tight, well-documented post-production handoff.
Responsibilities
- Direct and technical-direct multi-camera studio productions, including local series, specials, pledge drives, and client work
- Guide camera operators and the broader technical crew through rehearsal, setup, and live or recorded taping
- Operate control room equipment — switchers, graphics, and related production gear — during studio sessions
- Call shots and troubleshoot in real time to keep live and recorded productions running smoothly
- Deliver finished recorded content to the Operations and Traffic teams with complete, accurate metadata for broadcast
- Report to the Production Manager and coordinate scheduling across multiple concurrent productions
Requirements
- Working knowledge of production switchers and control room graphics systems
- Familiarity with current broadcast studio production techniques and workflows
- Experience with Ross Carbonite production switchers and Ross Xpression graphics generators strongly preferred
- Ability to create and operate graphic elements during live production
- Comfortable directing multi-camera crews under live broadcast time pressure
- To apply, email a cover letter and résumé to jobs@wedu.org with the subject line "Director - Technical Director" (or send by fax)
