Animal care, without the clinic

Remote veterinary jobs are telehealth and support roles: chatting or video-calling with pet owners, triaging symptoms, reviewing lab results and approving prescription refills under a veterinarian's supervision. Most are for licensed veterinarians and credentialed vet techs, and many are part-time or evening shifts.

The field behind them is growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 91,100 veterinarian jobs and 131,400 vet tech jobs and projects 9% growth for both (BLS: veterinarians; BLS: vet techs).

Listings below are tagged remote and veterinary. If the feed is empty, add your email above and we will alert you.

The real numbers

How much do remote veterinary jobs pay?

BLS medians are for all settings, not remote work specifically, so treat them as a baseline. Specific postings are labeled where the figure comes from a third party.

Pay for telehealth veterinarian gigs at platforms such as Dutch, Pawp and Airvet is not something we could verify, so we are not quoting numbers. Ask for the rate, and whether it is a W-2 or 1099 arrangement, before you start.

Credentials and licensing

What you need before you apply

Vets and techs both need credentials that are regulated state by state. Vet tech titles vary (CVT, LVT or RVT depending on the state) and most states require an exam, according to BLS.

The bigger constraint for telehealth is the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). The AVMA reports that most states, about 43 plus DC, require an in-person exam to establish a VCPR. A handful of states allow it virtually, and that list changes yearly, so check your state board. Vets also generally need a license in the state where the animal is located; AAHA calls this a patchwork quilt of rules.

In practice, this is why much of the remote work is triage, advice and follow-up with existing patients rather than new diagnoses.

Who is hiring

Verified remote veterinary employers

Each of these posts remote veterinary roles on its own careers site:

  • Chewy: telehealth veterinarians and telehealth vet techs. Techs must live in listed states.
  • Bond Vet: Virtual Nurse role covering triage, lab results and prescription approvals (Greenhouse board).
  • Modern Animal: Virtual Care Vet Tech, an evening shift of roughly 5 to 10 PM Pacific.
  • ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: regional remote CVT roles, with applicants required to live within 250 miles of Champaign, Illinois.
  • Safetycall: remote CVT roles (pay reported above, unverified).
What the work looks like

A typical virtual shift

Expect chat and video consults, symptom triage (is this an emergency or can it wait?), prescription approvals, and client education. Evening shifts are common because that is when pet owners are home. You need a quiet workspace, reliable internet and comfort making judgment calls without touching the animal.

Scam warning

Protect yourself

Pet-related job scams are common. The BBB has documented a fake-check pet-sitting scam where you are sent a check and asked to send money back. Real employers never do this. See also the FTC's job-scam alerts, and apply through the employer's own careers page.

Frequently asked questions

Remote Veterinary Jobs — FAQ

Can a veterinarian diagnose pets over video?

It depends on the state. The AVMA reports that most states, about 43 plus DC, require an in-person exam to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship. A handful allow it virtually, and the list changes every year, so check your state board.

Do I need a license in the state where the pet lives?

Generally yes for veterinarians: you typically need a license in the state where the animal is located. Vet tech credential names (CVT, LVT, RVT) and exam rules also vary by state.

How much do remote vet techs earn?

BLS reports a median of $47,380 a year ($22.78 an hour) for vet techs in all settings. Postings we reviewed include ASPCA Animal Poison Control at $24.50 to $26.90 an hour and a reported $20 to $21 an hour at Safetycall.

Are remote veterinary jobs full-time?

Many are part-time or evening shifts, such as Modern Animal's roughly 5 to 10 PM Pacific virtual tech shift. Full-time roles exist, so check each posting.

Bottom line

Is remote veterinary work worth it?

It suits credentialed vets and techs who want flexible or evening hours and are comfortable with triage and advice rather than hands-on care. Check state rules first, because they decide what you can legally do.
